Mise-en-scene

Props-

Photo frame- the photo frame is going to have a photo of the couple in and is going to be used in a shot of the unhappy boy looking at it.

Vase- the glass vase is going to be a still shot, with flowers spilled out of it, as if they have been pushed over.
Photo album- were going to use the photo album to have the couple looking back through photos and at each photo it will zoom into that time in the past.

Flowers- to go into the vase.

Kite- The kite is going to be used in a park scene to show them having fun before all of the arguments and fights started.

Costume-
These are the types of clothes we want the boy to wear, we want them to look like the typical indie boy, with skinny jeans and nice shirts.

For some of the shots we want the girl to look laid back and comfy but in other shots we want her to look dressed up as if she is trying to impress and going on a night out...

Our group want them in these styles of clothes as it fits in with our target audience and the genre of our music video.

Digipak research.

The cover is very dark and lowkey, the design is plain with the snow flake but you could say that the snow flake relates to the name of the band. The  name of the band is also in white which could link the the name of the band, as snow is white and links with snow flakes. The black background helps the audience focus on the title and image on the front, as the image is the only one and pretty simple it helps the audience focus on whos album it is and it would be easy to find in a shop. The flying/moving snowflake, looks like it moving up so this could link to the album name 'up to now'.

The colour theme stays throughout the front and back of the digipak, the dark black background makes it easy for the audience to focus on the songs. It puts people concentration on the songs so if they regonise or like a song they might buy the album. The way the songs are layed out shows the audiences exactly what they are getting on the album. The writing on the sides show the album so if the album is on its side on a shelf, it will still be easy to find, because of the bright red and white writing agaisnt the black background.

The image on the front of the digipak is a midshot of a cat in a hat from a christmas cracker. The two OOs in door, look like they are making glasses for the cat, this is making his eyes stand out more. The artists name is the main writing on the cover, its cold and white so the writing stands out the 'O's' and 'C's' are thinner which makes the writing more interesting to look at. The name of the album is written smaller in the same font at the bottom with the o's from tourist and history in the same way as the name of the band. The white writing agasint the dark back ground
The font on the back on the CD is the same type of font as the front they use all the O's and C's in the same way, this is good as they are carrying on the same effect and same font. The layout make its easy to read and find what song you may want to listen to. The logo and production information is in row with the song titles which makes it look neat and simple but effetive. The colour sheme is opposite to the front cover but the black writing agasint the light grey back ground helps the writing stand out.
The background image on the front of the kings of leon album is pretty simple yet effective, in the image its a simple picture of some sort of island on the sea with two palm trees, the sun in the images looks as if it is going down for the night, which links to the name of the album 'Come around sun down' Most people assoitate sunshine with a warm sunny, beach resort which is what is being protrayed on the front of the album. The font is placed in the middle centre and the top and bottom, the band name and song title are both quite small fonts, but are in capitals and the white writing is bright agaisnt the background but lets the audience take more notice of the image.

The back of the album, shows an long shot image of 4 peoples shadows, who the audience would persume to be the band, this could leave in audience in suspence. The background is the same background as the front but in this image the sun is rising and shining behide the band so is opposite to the sundown shown on the front. The song titles are placed top right of the album, the writing is quite small but again they have kept the same font and white writing as the front, which stands out agasint the background and lets people focus on the image. The colours thoughout the album are red, yellow and orange, these colours connoate sun and heat which is to do with the name of the album.

Institution

A record label is a brand and also  trademark which is linked with marketing music videos and songs.
The label controls,
  • the manufacture
  • marketing promotion
  • copyright
  • production nd distribution.
Major insitiutions.
Four big major record labels are:

  • Sony BMG
  • Universal music group.
  • EMI
  • Warner music group.

These four labels represent most of the music sold, together they make up 75% of the music market.
Each of these record labels  have smaller labels, allowing them to specific genres labels, aswell as companies being in different places which makes it easier for them to distribute their products around the world.

We are going to aim at music video just to the UK, as its indie music we want it to play on channels that also play that type of music so it gets seen by the right audience.

MTV rocks plays similar music to our song, such as Florence and the machine and snow patrol the audience that listens to them artists is the audience we are targeting the music video at.

4 music is a music and entertainment channel which shows the latest music around but also has shows where they have interviews with artists and bands, so it would be good if we could get our music video on this channel as it would be a lot of publicity

MTV music offers all different types of music, it shows the weekly music charts and much more. MTV is one of the well known music channels so having our music video known to there viewers will be good, for people to get to know the band and song.

recording the shots.

In the October half term we started to record shots for our music video we managed to get at least half of the shots done but need to carry on throughout this week to get the rest of them done. Due to everyone being available to carry on record we have decided to finish our recording in the chirstmas half term holidays so through the time between that we are going to continue on with our research and digipak.

Risk assessment

Here is our risk assesment sheet, we identified where our nearest A&E is and this is situated in Selly Oak. We also identified hazards and the hazards and risks that could be involved in our shoot are
  • Artists controlling props
  • Eletricity, appliances
For the artist controlling props, the people at risks at the actors and one of the main risks is of them falling, we thought to control these measures to minimise the risks we should check the tripod is secure and check all actors know what they are doing with props.
The eletricity appliances, open a risk to everybody and the main risk identified is electricution, to minimise this risk we need to have all saftey checks done and make sure everything is plugged in right and is secure.

Theories

The narrative theory which I would say fits to our music video, is Torodov as in our music video with have a equilibrium where everyone is calm and getting along, we then have disruption where the arguing and cheating comes along and we also have a new equilibrium where its calm but things have changed for example the boy looking at a photo of him and her, yet they are not together. Although we used a non-linear narrative and our story is backwards we still have a beginning middle and end.

Narrative theory.

There are different ways of consuming media

Primary media
  • Choose to do something.
  • Choose to watch it.
  • Demands attention.
Secondary media
  • Provides a background.
  • Audience doing something else at the same time.
Tertiary media
  • Texts that are consumed by audience which are almost unaware.
  • Radios in shops.
I think our music video gets consumed as primary media by the audience as they are choosing to watch it and need to pay attention to understand what is going on. The digipack and tourposter is also primary/secondary media as people may choose to read and look at it yet others may not be as interested.

Effect models.

Hypodermic syringe theory-20s.

According to this theory media injects ideas and beliefs into the audience. There was fears that audiences will mimic and copy what they see through media, for example horror films.
This theory thinks that media has no consideration for a persons education, intelligence or experiences.

Two step flow theory-40-50s.

This theory researched the hypodermic theory and showed that people dont copy what they consume from media so a new theory was required. This theory believes we are more affected by media if we discuss it with others, our opinions and other peoples opinions affect our views on the media.
  • Step one- See media
  • Step two- Ask someones opinion.
Uses +Gratifications- 70s- Blumers + Kats.

According to this theory, we all have different uses for the media and we make choices over what we want to watch.
  • Personal identity- using media for emotional and other interaction. E.g soap operas, family life. Finding yourself reflection in texts learning behaviour and values.
  • Surveillance- Information which could be useful for living. E.g weather, financial news.
  • Entertainment- Enjoyment, relation, fill the time.
  • Diverson- Escape from everyday promblems and routine.
Reception Theory- 80s + 90s- Stuart Hall.

According to this theory individuals receive + interpret texts, the audiences individual circumstances for example, gender, class, age and ethnicity affect their way of reading.
Encoding/ decoding text is encoded by producers and decoded by the reader. Sometimes there are major differences between the two different readings of the same thing but the theory believes audiences can decode texts.

Preferred reading- is where the audience know that a film with shadows will be a scary film or a man with fangs is a vampire, they can decode the message.

I think our music video fits into the theory of Uses and Gratifications- Blumers and Kats, as audiences may may watch it for entertainment to enjoy the music video and to fill time and also they may watch it for personal identity as they may relate to the actors in it, as they may have experiences being in a relationship being cheated on.

Also the two step flow theory, as if people see our music video and talk about it to their friends it may change there opinion on it and see it in a different way.

Audience demographics

Demographic- Our music video is aimed at males and females aged between 16-25, there income can be average as the music video will be free on music channels but the album will be around £9-12. They dont have to have a top education as the video is pretty simple to follow and easy to understand whats happening.

Audience profiles- My music video is aimed at all types of people but mainly middle class (groupB) as they can fit in the time to watch/ listen to the video as other busier working people might not be able to, also they will be able to afford items such as concert tickets and cds.7

Psychographic- The genre of our song is targeted for festival goers and people who enjoy listening to indie music.
Geographic-  My music video aimed at local and national people, people who live in the UK.

Recce

Here are our first reece shots of the bedroom and stairs where many of our shots will take place, we then came across some problems that meant we could not use this house to film in so we then decided to start our filming in this house...

This is our recce list of where we are going to film and when, also we wrote about how we would get there and if there are any power sockets and props we would need.

Animatics

The Animatic is a video created by using shots from our storyboard
We have made our Animatic so we know when, where and what shots are to be used in our actual music video, making the Animatic is a good because it allows you to get a rough idea how the music video is going to look like.
It also allows you to see how long (seconds) its going to take between shots and if it fits in with the timing of the music.

Unfortunatly we were unable to upload our animatic.

Shotlists and storyboards.

Here is our shot list, its show us all the shots we are going to use for example, still shot and what kind of movement we will use such as pan or tracking.

Here is a close up image of our shots, showing the movement and shot we are using and the seconds it is going to take.

Here is our song choice annotated, with the timings of each line and how many seconds is between them, we needed to know this so we could fit in when shots were and how long they should last for.

Here is our story boards, this is showing each shot invidually and how it is going to be, we also captioned underneath each shot what was going on and the shot and movement that was going to be used. It helped us put our shots in a sequence and see if they would work.

Here is our shot this, this helped us organise what type of shot we wanted to use, what was happening in it and what type of action. We could use this and the story board to see what else we needed to film. On the shot list it tells us the number of the shot, type of shot, what happening in the shot and the action we are going to use. For e.g, for shot 1  is a close up of  broken photoframe and is a still shot.

whats been discussed.

LINEAR NARRATIVE- has a beginning, a middle and an end.

End, Middle, Beginning- NON- LINEAR NARRATIVE.

NON-LINEAR.
  • Beginning of video to start at the end of the story --> FIGHTING.
  • Middle --> evidence of cheating, phone/texts/facebook.
  • End -->start of their relationship/ kite and park.

We are going to have a non-linear video, as it will we more interesting for the audience to watch instead of  plain story in order.

Group Details.

After the summer holidays changes were made within the groups and two of the girls left and two of the boys left, so we formed to make a new group of:

  • Mohamedabbas Mussa.
       http://www.momussaa2.blogspot.com/

  • Sean Jameson.
   http://www.a2sean.blogspot.com/
  • Annalise Wills
      http://www.annalise-media13.blogspot.com/

We choose to carry on with song we originally choose which was The Kooks- Naive because we already had permission from the artists and ideas of what to do. This isnt the two boys orginial genre but we thought it would be best to keep to the Kooks song as the boys hadnt yet gained permission to the song they wanted to do, also we thought it would be best to joined us to groups together as it is better to have four people working on it aand having lots of different ideas than just two of us.
During working on our coursework Sean took the choice to leave 6th form to focus on different things, so this meant that our group when  down to only 3 of us.

Mohamedabbas is in control of the editing, but if one of us in the group thinks something will look better a certain way, we will talk about it and choose what fits best.

Me and Annalise are in control of filming but if Mohamedabbas thinks we should change a certain shot he is welcome to change it.

Annalise researched costumes and decided what kind of outfits we want of actors to wear and Me and Mohamedabbas choose the props we would need for what shots.

Analysing 3 music videos.

       Bombay Bicycle club
                                   Always like this.

1. I like the way the video seems as if its on TV and in parts when the video is going faster there is a fast forward button which makes it look like someone is controling it and it makes it look like time is flying past in the video.
The video starts of with showing all the places that the artists are within the video. I also like how they are always playing instruments in the places and the places on werid they are just normal everyday places for e.g houses and shops.

The lead gets introduced first and its a mid-shot of him in front of houses which you expect is his, the mid-shot lets you see most of him the houses and him playing the guiter. You then get introduced to all the band one by one, as they all walk past one of the places you see at the start of the video and all end up together at the same place. The lead then goes to all the places and you see him playing in front at one point his standing in the middle of a round-a-bout which makes it more interesting as it looks like his having fun. The whole band is then at a new destination and at first it starts with a close up of the drummer so you can see him playing but then becomes a long shot so you can see the whole band and background. It then has a mid shot so you can see the lead and a guitist it then 'pauses' on them in video. The next place they play at is the house, there is a close up of the lead singer, which might imply that it is his house and because its the chorus it shows him singing it,  at the next place is outside 3 garages but they kept changing colour which keeps it interesting there is a few close ups of the guitar, its 'fast forwarded' in the video which makes it look like they are there for a while.
The next part in the video it has turned to night and the lead singer is outside a shop playing and singing, you then see clips of different places around a town. There is then a mid-shot of all the band members playing outside of a place which looks like a pub or club with flashing lights, yet there outside. The next clip is as in a carpark and the way the band is normally set out has changed but the lead singer is still at the front as he is the main. There is a few close ups of the members which kind of helps the audience get to know them and helps them be regonised. There is then more shots of the band in places where they have been such as the busstop and outside shops. The video then 'fast forwards' to all the places they have been which recaps the video to the audience. It ends with the band outside the house then they walk off in different directions and it fast forwards to a black screen.

I think the video is trying to show the place which the band live and where they go, i also think there trying to show that its a bband who is trying to make an name for themselfs, as they are playing outside places and on the street and not in rooms with people watching them.

The Wombats.
Moving to New York

The video starts with a zoom into the man’s room. You then see him lying in bed then standing but watching the TV it’s all very fast pace. You always see a mouse cage which could imply he lives by himself and its his only ‘friend’. The lyric is ‘I’ve just had the craziest week’ and his staring at the TV in a daze. On the TV its looks like its his band and its him performing. The next part is a mid-shot of him at a train station singing that his 'moving to Newyork' which could mean his getting on the train to move. Throughout the video you see images of the band, so its trying to tell the audience about the band. The next few parts are very fast paced and are based in some sort of office or meeting, the main person in the video looks very stressed and tired which could contribute to why he has 'trouble with his sleep' At one point his peering through a door window into the room and it zooms up to his face at first glance he seeings werid things happening, for example a man dancing on the table and second glance a midshot of just four smart people at a table peering back at him. The next part of the video, its a mid shot of the mouse, and underneath is subtitles of the mouse talking to him, he then replies to the mouse but you see a mid shot to a zoom of him sitting on the bed with no facial expression. The next part of the video his in the train station again, put instead of a train coming out the tunnel the mouse does, this makes it funny for the audience to watch but also shows that he must be going a little bit crazy. Theres then mid-shots of him walking through a dark room with lights flickering then it goes black so you can only see his head and him singing so it implys to the audience that his lonely.

The Kooks- Naive
I'm not saying it was your fault                         Sounds like a break-up line usually 'its not you its me'
Although you could have done more
Oh you're so naive yet so                                   Naive in that she thought he wouldnt find out.
                    Easily led
How could this be done                                    Perhaps cheated on him?

Your such a smiling sweetheart
Oh and your sweet and pretty face
In such an ugly way
Something so beautiful                             afraid to confront him because she wouldnt be beautiful anymore.

That everytime I look inside
I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me                                 Maybe he broke up with her and shes still hassling him.

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking      He knows shes cheating and she knows, he knows but he doesnt    want to bring it up

True or false it may be
She's still out to get me

I may say it was your fault
Cause I know you could have done more
could have tried harder in their relationship.

Oh you're so naive yet so
How could this be done                                        How could she have cheated/hurt him.

By such a smiling sweetheart
Oh and your sweet and pretty face
In such an ugly way something so beautiful
Everytime I look inside

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me                                                                    Already has his attention she targets him and he has no choice but to want her.

I know that she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it may be
She's still out to get me

How could this be done
By such a smiling sweetheart

Oh you're so naive yet so
                                   always doing rebellious things- drinking/guys.

Such an ugly thing                                      Cheating/hurt is an ugly thing.
Someone so beautiful
And everytime you're on his side
                 suggests cheating.
I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it maybe be she's still out to get me
She wants him to think she's cheating whether she is or not.

And I know she knows that I'm not fond of asking
True or false it maybe be she's still out to get me

Just don't let me down
Just don't let me down
Hold on to your kite
Symbolic reference to himself- if you let go of a kite it will fall.
Possibly represents his dream of being with her.
Just don't let me down
Just don't let me down
Hold on to your kite
Just don't let me down
Just don't let me down
Hold on to this kite
Just don't let me down

We had two options of songs from the band the kooks,
  • Seaside
  • Naive
We decided to choose naive as we spoke about what ideas we could use in our video and had more for naive, also naive is a longer song than seaside.

Permission from The Kooks.

Here is an email from 'The kooks' giving us permission to use one of there songs, as we wanted to use the orginal song.
